Most of us now use GenAI and MT as standard tools, but having the right tech is only half the battle. Without a plan, localization leaders often feel like toddlers on a long car ride, constantly asking if they have arrived without knowing the destination. At our first Localization Insider Club meeting, Tamara Tirjak explained how to move from daily chaos to strategic alignment.
The difference is simple: strategy defines the “what” and “why,” while tactics focus on the “how”. Think of a sailing boat. Strategy is the destination, but tactics are how you adjust the ropes to catch the wind. To win the “war” rather than just the daily “battle,” you must look at the big picture. Using tools like STEP and SWOT analysis helps you understand external pressures and internal gaps. This shift is what turns a localization department from a cost center into a vital revenue driver.
Execution is often the hardest part. Tamara suggests eating the “elephant” one bite at a time by breaking yearly goals into monthly and weekly tasks. If a strategic task takes only five minutes, like sending a quick update, fit it between your daily deliverables. To make these plans stick, find accountability points. Sharing progress with your manager or team ensures your big ideas do not slide when things get busy.
